Pokémon for parents: what your kids are playing and collecting

What is Pokémon?

Pokémon is a franchise that includes video games, trading cards, and animated series. The video game series involves players capturing and training imaginary creatures called Pokémon. The game world features various regions, each with unique Pokémon species and environments. The art style is colorful and animated, and is known for its Japanese Anime animation style.

The Pokémon series offers a captivating blend of adventure, strategy, collection, and social interaction. Kids often get fascinated with Pokémon trading cards, giving them an alternative to the screen, as the game and social interaction can then continue offline, away from the screen.

The game’s charm lies in the vast array of Pokémon and the excitement of capturing, collecting, and training them. The sense of adventure, exploration, and strategy is appealing to many players.

How to play

In Pokémon games, players assume the role of a Pokémon Trainer who captures, trains, and battles with Pokémon creatures. A few core elements are shaping the game:

  • Catching Pokémon: Players use Poké Balls to catch Pokémon found in the wild. Each Pokémon has unique abilities and characteristics.

  • Battling: Players battle other Pokémon Trainers and wild Pokémon. Battles are turn-based, with players choosing moves and strategies to defeat their opponents.

  • Training: Players level up their Pokémon through battles, improving their stats and abilities.

Pokémon games can be played solo or with others. Players can trade Pokémon and battle friends either locally or online. Multiplayer interactions add a social element to the game.

The main goal is to become a Pokémon Master by catching a variety of Pokémon, completing the Pokédex, and defeating Gym Leaders and other trainers. The games emphasize strategy, exploration, and collection.

  • Screen time: As with any game, managing screen time is important.

  • Pokémon cards and merchandise: Many Pokémon fans will not just play the video game, but also be into collecting Pokémon cards and other merchandise available in stores.
