How to be a good role model

Kids learn from what we do, not what we say - so we must start with ourselves.

How to be a good role model

Checklist

First things first. Before we make agreements around digital use, it’s important to make sure we, as parents, can walk the walk and not just talk the talk. It’s ok to have some things that are ok for adults, and not for kids, but aim to stipulate this.

Children will do what we do more than what we say. So try to be aware of what your values are and that you, first and foremost, are being a good role model. Check in regularly.

1

Am I able to be present in my environment when I am not on my computer or phone?

2

Do I sit in front of a computer many hours in a row without a break?

3

Do I send messages, read updates on social media, answer mails etc, when the family is together?

4

Do I film small or big moments and share them on social media without thinking about it?

5

Do I share with my child what I am doing on my phone, looking up on the net, playing games etc?

6

Do I have a public profile on platforms such as, Facebook or Instagram?

7

Do I post pictures of my kids and others’ on social media without asking them first?

8

Are there any media-free zones in the house (e.g.,mealtimes), and do I respect them as well?
